UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Justin Swidowski scored a game-high 18 points while Shane Gibson chipped in with 15 points to lead the Sacred Heart University men’s basketball team to a 70-50 win over the University of Hartford. The game was part of the Connecticut 6 Classic at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
` The two teams started slowly as the Pioneers opened up a slight 5-4 lead five minutes into the game. Sacred Heart picked up the pace from that point, using a 15-2 run over the next six minutes to open up a 20-6 lead with 8:56 remaining in the half. Seven different Sacred Heart players scored during that run which was capped by a three pointer from Gibson.
The Hawks pulled within seven points by scoring the next seven points, making the score 20-13 after Wes Cole’s three pointer at the 5:33 mark. The Pioneers built the lead to double digits by halftime, going into the locker room with a 26-15 advantage.
Hartford opened the second half with five straight points to pull within 26-20 as Clayton Brothers scored off a layup and Genesis Maciel added a three pointer with 18:29 remaining. Sacred Heart answered with a 14-7 run that pushed the lead to 13 points at 40-27 with 11 minutes left in the game.
The Hawks pulled within seven points twice after that run, the last of which came with 1:43 left at 57-50. Sacred Heart finished the game by scoring the last 13 points of the game to post the 20-point win.
Yolonzo Moore II led all Hartford scorers with 12 points, while Jamie Schneck added 11 points a team-high seven rebounds for the Hawks.
